“The B Word” is a documentary about one man’s exploration of what it means to be Black, gay, and beautiful.

The film was conceived and performed by Jared Shamberger, presented by the University of Arizona LGBTQ+ Resource Center and Arizona Arts’ Racial Justice Studio.

Jared Shamberger, a playwright, performer, and director, interviews Black gay men of various ages and backgrounds about their ideas, choices, and hang ups around beauty. While these men share their stories and perspectives, Jared weaves in a few of his own celebrating the complexity of what it means to be beautiful.

Of “The B Word,” Jared says, “Lately, I’ve been exploring the intersectionality of language and culture. As the world gets smaller, the lines between what belongs to a particular group of people get blurrier. […] My guiding questions are: what is permissible and who is endowed to grant this permission? As an artist, my job is to be both a mirror and a window: a mirror to reflect the people and ideas in the room and a window to the people and ideas that aren’t.”
