Hasan Elahi began his appointment as the dean of Arizona Arts on July 1, 2025.

Elahi is an artist and higher education leader whose work bridges art, technology, and civic life. His creative projects, centered on themes of identity, surveillance, and media, have been exhibited internationally at the Venice Biennale, Centre Georges Pompidou, and the Sundance Film Festival.

His work is frequently in the media and has been covered by The New York Times, Forbes, Wired, and has appeared on Al Jazeera, Fox News, and The Colbert Report. Elahi has spoken about his work to a broad range of audiences such as Tate Modern, Einstein Forum, National Geographic, the American Association of Artificial Intelligence, TED, and the World Economic Forum.

His recent awards include a Guggenheim Fellowship, an Alpert/MacDowell Fellowship, grants from Creative Capital, Art Matters Foundation, the Doris Duke Foundation for Islamic Art, and he is a recipient of a Hugh M. Hefner First Amendment Award. He serves on the National Advisory Council at Creative Capital and on the Advisory Board for the New Media Caucus.

Prior to Tucson, Elahi served as the dean of the College of Fine, Performing and Communication Arts at Wayne State University (2022-25). He was an associate professor and professor at George Mason University’s School of Art for 12 years, serving at the school’s director from 2019-2022. While at George Mason, he also held affiliate faculty appointments at the Business for a Better World Center in the School of Business, and at the Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter School for Peace and Conflict Resolution.

He holds an MFA in Printmaking from the Cranbrook Academy of Art and a BA in Studio Art from Bloomsburg University.
