Studying abroad can sound like a major undertaking. Students have to consider where they want to go, how courses will apply to their degrees, what the program will cost and how to handle applications and travel arrangements.

From art in Barcelona to music in Rome, College of Fine Arts students can explore creative fields in programs around the world. Here’s how to find an option that fits your degree – and get help with the Study Abroad process.

The University of Arizona’s Global Tracks offer a place to start. They identify programs and courses that have been reviewed for specific majors and minors, helping students see how studying abroad might fit into their degree plans. Global Tracks is designed to make it easy for student to plan a study abroad experience, working with academic advisors, as part of a student’s degree path.

The program works with the office of Transfer Credit Evaluation and academic departments to determine how courses transfer and apply to majors. The pre-approved course lists are updated as additional courses are approved.

The Global Tracks are not a complete list of study abroad opportunities. Jacob Eavis, a study abroad recruitment manager, said they help students identify programs aligned with their majors or minors. Students also have other programs in the university catalog from which to choose.

“A Global Track is a helpful way for students to serve study abroad programs that fit really well with their major or minor, but they are not the only options,” Eavis wrote. “We have over 90 programs in our catalog that any major can consider for their study abroad journey.”

Program availability can vary by term. Students should confirm current offerings and course details with the Study Abroad team and their academic advisers.

How to narrow down the options

Students do not have to search through every destination and program on their own. They can create a study abroad profile using their University of Arizona login and take a program-matching survey. The survey helps identify options that may fit their academic needs and interests.

The profile also lets students begin communicating with the Study Abroad team. There, students can get help comparing programs and figuring out which ones warrant a closer look.

Students can connect with the team in three ways:

  1. Drop-in advising: Meeting with a peer advisor, a student who has studied abroad and can help get others started. Drop-in hours are 2-5 p.m. Monday through Friday in the Global Lounge at the Global Center. No appointment is needed. Virtual and in-person options are available.
  • Information sessions: Attend a short session about Study Abroad 101, paying for study abroad, program options or next steps.
  • Appointments: Schedule time with a peer advisor to discuss program options or with a Study Abroad Coordinator for detailed guidance on a specific program or application.

After applying to a program, students are assigned a Study Abroad Coordinator. Coordinators help with the application and can guide students through matters such as student visas, host-school and housing applications, and pre-departure orientation.

Make the right degree plan fit

Students should also meet with their academic advisors to discuss how a program could fit into their degree plans. That conversation can help students understand whether courses abroad will apply to major or minor requirements and when it might make sense to go.

“The goal of study abroad is that any program will fit into any four-year degree plan so that students don’t need to add extra time in order to participate,” Eavis wrote. “Studying abroad should help students stay on track to graduate, or even early in some cases.”

Planning ahead is especially useful for students in programs with set course sequences, studio requirements or performance schedules. An academic advisor can help students consider timing and degree requirements before they apply.

Costs and funding

The cost of studying abroad varies by program, location, and length. Students in Arizona abroad and exchange programs pay regular University of Arizona tuition and can use most forms of financial aid and scholarships.

Faculty-led programs change a program fee, and students can use only certain forms of financial aid and scholarships. Students should ask about costs and available funding for the specific program they consider.

Eavis wrote that the Garcia Family Foundation provided support last year for scholarships of up to $7,000 per student. The Study Abroad team can help students understand which funding sources may apply to their programs.
