College of Fine Arts

Behind every student’s journey at the College of Fine Arts (CFA) are the dedicated academic advisors who help them navigate college life, pursue their passions, and find their creative communities.

Meet the unsung heroes of the College of Fine Arts.

Here’s a quick look at a few of the advisors who make a difference every day:

Hannah Lawless
College of Fine Arts
School of Art (Design Arts and Practice)

“I love working with university students and helping them reach their goals.”

As the advisor for CFA and Design Arts and Practice majors, Hannah Lawless is passionate about guiding students from day one to graduation. She encourages students to come prepared with an understanding of their degree requirements and to take notes during advising sessions.

Her advice? “Try new things. Going to places and events that interest you will allow you to be around people who share your interests and bring you closer to finding your community.”

Ashley Rubin
School of Art

“I am your advocate and will do everything I can to help you obtain your dream.”

Ashley Rubin (MA ’14, Art History loves meeting new people and solving problems, which makes her a natural fit as the School of Art advisor.

She believes that students should never hesitate to ask for help. Rubin’s best advice to give any student, new or not, is simply to ask. Advisors know all types of people doing all types of things both on and off campus. They can help connect you.

Her parting encouragement? “Don’t be discouraged; your people are out there—we just need to find them!”

Brian Peel
School of Dance

“Advising is multifaceted. It’s part guidance, part counseling, and part teaching.”

As the School of Dance advisor, Brian Peel enjoys empowering students to make decisions that align with their passions. He recommends students take time to think about their interests and ask around to find groups that resonate with them.

“If you search these things out, you will find a group that will make you feel at home.”

Meily Mendez
School of Music

“I enjoy supporting this group of humans, giving them the ins-and-outs of musician-ing, brainstorming their learning and musical struggles, and nurturing their growth as individuals.”

Dr. Meily Mendez (MM ’09, DMA ’16, Piano Performance) believes that the advising process is about teamwork with the students.

Her advice? “We find meaning in service. Volunteer or join a club—there are many opportunities across campus to take part in something meaningful.”

As an alumna of the University of Arizona, Dr. Mendez is able to provide valuable insights as she mentors students through their degree paths.

Hannah Meyer
School of Theatre, Film & Television

“Advisors can help make sure students aren’t taking unnecessary or unhelpful classes, which saves them time and money.”

Hannah Meyer wants students to know to be proactive when it comes to picking out classes. She reminds students they are not alone in their journey.

“There are other students in the same position. Think about what you’re looking for in a community and pay attention when you notice that in the people you meet,” she advises.
