Former Kronos Quartet member Jeffrey Zeigler and composer Paola Prestini transform four poets’ verses into dreamscapes of music, movement, and film.
Houses of Zodiac, A Refracted Anthology brings word, movement, music, and image together to illuminate the verses of four poets: Pablo Neruda, Brenda Shaughnessy, Natasha Trethewey, and Anaïs Nin. Zeigler performs Prestini’s luminous score while New York City Ballet soloist “Rogue Ballerina” Georgina Pazcoguin and Butoh dancer and Sankai Juku member Dai Matsuoka bring their own choreographies to life. The latency of the poems is refracted through music, dance, and archival images, each perspective curated into an anthology of four interwoven short films directed by Murat Eyuboglu.
The composite work draws inspiration from sources as diverse as the choreography of Samuel Beckett, the conceptual art of Sol LeWitt, and the natural world itself. Strings Magazine lauded the recorded version as “one of the greatest and most ambitious solo cello albums of all time,” and this live iteration transforms that vision into an immersive experience where bodies, sound, and image move together in perfect synchronicity. From intimate sketches on love to a Pacific ritual, from the troubled streets of New Orleans to a surreal galactic journey through Anaïs Nin’s dreamscape, each section explores solitude, agency, conflict, and ultimately emancipation.
