Join Zarco Guerrero and his unique masked characters as they celebrate Día de los Muertos through hilarious and moving storytelling at the University of Arizona Museum of Art.
Día de Los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is a significant holiday celebrated throughout Mexico, Latin America and the Southwest. It is a day when homage is paid with prayers, offerings of food and the building of altars to those who have gone before us.
Presented in partnership with the Arizona State Museum, multi-talented maskmaker and performer Zarco Guerrero brings a miniature Día de Los Muertos celebration to the UAMA galleries! Among the colorful characters making appearances are: the poetry spouting “El Vato Poeta,” the flirtatious “La Comadre,” the wise “El Abuelito,” and other beloved roles that Zarco, a prolific playwright, has created to express the humor and sadness of our lives. Musical accompaniment will be provided by Carmen de Novais.
This performance marks the opening day of UAMA’s “Staged: The Art of Performance” exhibition. Visitors can an enjoy an all-day art-making station, as well as venture across the street to the Center for Creative Photography’s Community Day for activities and performances inspired by their latest exhibition, Animality: 100 Years of Photographs.
