Over the summer of 2020, the UAMA invited artists from our community to submit artwork depicting their myriad experiences with the destabilizing events of this year. Their overwhelming response resulted in Picturing 2020: A Community Reflects, an online exhibition featuring works by more than 150 artists from across Southern Arizona.

The community’s creative response to the COVID-19 pandemic, systemic racial violence, the ravages of climate change, and a highly-charged political environment inspired UAMA curators to select works from the Museum’s permanent collection that echo those themes. Although art can be a marker of the time in which it was created, its meaning is also fluid and can change with context.
In this exhibition you will see artwork made prior to 2020 take on new relevance when viewed through today’s lens. The corresponding labels reflect the community artists’ sentiments of isolation, frustration, longing, and hope.
