Picturing 2020: A Community Reflects features works by more than 150 artists from Southern Arizona that depict our local community’s myriad experiences with the destabilizing events of this year. Despite the differences in medium and style, many of these artworks share common themes related to feelings of isolation, frustration, longing, and hope.

Although it is often said that art reflects the time in which it was created, its meaning can also change over time when seen through a new lens. With this in mind, curators selected works from the Museum of Art’s permanent collection to include in response to submitted artworks. How do these artworks echo the themes of the local community and take on new relevance today?

The events of this year highlight vulnerabilities and deep inequities in our community, but also show our immense resiliency and capacity to dream of something new. We hope this exhibition inspires a sense of community through shared experiences.
