A conversation with artist Hank Willis Thomas and collector Jordan D. Schnitzer at the University of Arizona Museum of Art.
Based in New York, Hank Willis Thomas is among the most prominent contemporary artists of the past 25 years. Jordan D. Schnitzer is a Portland, Oregon-based philanthropist and real estate developer recognized among the top 200 art collectors in the world. Since their initial meeting in 2019, not only is Schnitzer the biggest collector of Thomas’ work, but the two men have become dear friends.
The two men will discuss the evolution of Thomas’ art practice over the last 20 years and the various themes he explores – commodity, identity, media and popular culture – as well as Schnitzer’s passion for collecting and what drew him to Thomas’ work in particular.
“Hank Willis Thomas: LOVERULES, From the Collections of Jordan D. Schnitzer and His Family Foundation” opens at UAMA on Jan. 18, running through June 21.
