MFA candidate Claire Blanchette, recipient of the School of Art’s 2023 Marcia Grand Centennial Sculpture Prize, will present her exhibition “To Pass Through Two Doors at Once” in the Lionel Rombach Gallery.
The opening reception was Nov. 9, and the exhibition has been extended until Dec. 15.
The exhibition consists of mycelium-grown bricks built into two interacting walls. Blanchette used mycelium blooms — the network of thin filaments that collect food, water and nutrients that nourish fungi — to grow bricks that form the sculpture’s structure.
“By creating a walled garden structure from living organic material, the exhibition investigates the many ways in which we attempt to organize and control the environment around us,” Blanchette says.
