Bennett Curran enhanced his senior thesis film, thanks to support from the College of Fine Arts Medici Circle.
Curran, a senior pursuing his BA in Film & Television online, created his own film “California is Burning” to highlight the devastation brought by the Eaton fire in southern California. In a story of resilience, he aims to uplift the voices of those affected. With his Medici Scholarship, he was able to implement an additional segment on the Pasadena Humane Society Animal Evacuation Center and an original musical score by Summer Davis.

In the film, he conducted interviews with the residents of Altadena to provide a real-world perspective on how the fires affected the community.

“The experience of interviewing residents firsthand while creating this film has changed my life,” Curran said.
“The residents of Altadena treated me with such compassion, and I am a better filmmaker for the challenges I overcame, conversations held, and lessons learned on this project,” he said.

These fires hit close to home for Curran, as he evacuated Los Angeles when the Sunset fire set Hollywood Hills ablaze. Nine months after the Eaton Fire, residents are still in dire need of support, he noted, adding that he includes a call-to-action for viewers to get involved within their communities in his film and on his website.
“California is Burning” will be screened at the Altadena Library on Nov. 22.
