College of Fine Arts, School of Music

Chuan Choy spent the summer conducting musical performances and research in Argentina and Brazil, supported by the College of Fine Arts Medici Circle.

Choy, a second-year doctoral student studying piano, presented two musical performances, a masterclass, and research sessions to communities within the Pestalozzi School in Buenos Aires, Argentina as well as State University of Paraná in Curitiba, Brazil. He spent ample time connecting with advanced music students in masterclass formats, also studying the nationalistic style of Brazilian music.

Choy said he developed a plethora of new skills, experiencing the world of touring as a musician. In addition to this, he experienced cultures different from his own.

“I learned so much about the different cultures in Argentina and Brazil, and was inspired by the cities, environment, and the people,” he said.  “I was able to expand my professional network in the two countries.”

He added that the tour presented not only performance experience, but teaching opportunities as well.

“I developed an impromptu workshop with a local music academy in Buenos Aires, with the topic on overcoming performance anxiety,” he said, noting another masterclass in Curitiba, Brazil.

Through honing his skills as a clinician and performer, the challenges presented ultimately allowed him to grow even further. Additionally, the aspect of travel opened his eyes to how many musicians there are in other parts of the world.

“Working with students in Brazil allowed me to understand the different approaches in music and strengthen my teaching voice,” he said. “I also discovered underrepresented Brazilian composers and how their music reflects the rich culture of the country.”
