College of Fine Arts, School of Dance

Kate Eid attended a dance intensive in Paris, France, thanks to support from the College of Fine Arts Medici Circle

Eid, a junior majoring in dance and creative writing, attended a two-week intensive with “Graham for Europe,” a dance intensive based in the Martha Graham technique.

Facilitated by Rafael Molina with the help of Penny Diamantopoulou and other former Graham dancers and faculty, the intensive allows dancers to collaborate with European artists through Graham’s modern technique. As a result, dancers facilitate keeping Martha Graham’s spirit alive through relevant and creative interpretations.

Eid noted that the program offered an environment for experimentation in the theme of “opposition.”

After exploring concepts of this theme, she said they “took those concepts into movement with a partner, then incorporated a prop into the movement phrase created by my partner and I.”

“With our own creations and Penny’s incredible storytelling and choreographic choices, we ended up with a 10-minute project that we performed on the last day of the intensive,” she added.

Through these two weeks, she received insight in the life of a professional dancer.

“I received such beautiful insight into how professional Graham dancers see their work and continue to live an inspired life,” she said.

“This intensive taught me the importance of continuing to create art in the name of humanity and celebration of life. The project’s theme helped me understand how imperfect and yet necessary it is to live and create with an open heart in spite of the worst of the world.”
