Cole Nagoda served as a composition fellow in Spain and the Netherlands this summer, thanks to support from the College of Fine Arts Medici Circle.
Nagoda, a junior BM major in music composition, composed pieces for the Valencia International Arts Summer Festival in Spain and the Cortona Sessions for New Music education program in Ede, Netherlands. In Valencia, students participated in masterclasses and performances led by composers and performers from around the world. The Cortona Sessions feature 12 days of exploration of contemporary music, collaboration, and what it takes to make a career as a 21st-century musician.

He studied with teachers from the Boston Conservatory of Music, the Royal Conservatory of The Hague, and the University of Music Graz.
Initially, Nagoda was drawn to these programs for the opportunity to have his new original compositions performed, but that experience expanded while in Europe.
“I feel the most lasting benefits will be the connections I made both with fellow students and faculty mentors,” he said. “I had invigorating conversations with peers from around the world who consistently inspired me to strive to create my best work. Learning from many established figures in contemporary music was a distinct honor. I expect the links I formed this summer will guide my development as an artist for years to come.”

This was his first time in either country. He spent 11 days in Valencia, flew to Amsterdam and took a train to Ede, where he spent 12 more days. He did find a few moments to visit Maastricht, a beautiful town in the southern tip of the Netherlands.
