Gia Del Pino earned a certificate in Art and Curatorial Practice this summer, thanks to support from the College of Fine Arts Medici Circle.

Del Pino, a fifth-year PhD student in art and visual culture education, participated in the New Centre for Research and Practice’s virtual certificate program. The centre’s mission is to expand possibilities for students to practice their work and conduct research beyond an academic space. The goal for their students is to collaborate with emerging scholars to build the future of higher education.

The Art and Curatorial Practice program grants creatives an opportunity to think critically and on the fly.

“Their graduate-level certificates complement and enhance MA and PhD programs,” she said, “recognizing participants’ independent research and practice while broadening their academic and professional expertise in various disciplines.”

The certificate program selects artists, curators, writers, publishers, and editors to challenge them in a rigorous curriculum, examining the possibilities for art long term through a global context.

Through the program, Del Pino was able to create her own photography project.

“My project focuses on the politics of representation in photographic practices,” she said.

The program takes a contemporary approach, allowing students to think critically also about advances in technology and the overall engineering of modern day artwork. Additionally, students are provided with new methodologies intended to be implemented into higher education arts curricula.

Del Pino said through this certification, she has grown significantly as a professional in the field.

“This experience has strengthened my academic and professional skills at the intersection of theory, writing, and curatorial work,” she said.
