Chelsea Cannon participated in a choral workshop and performed in Italy, this summer, thanks to support from the College of Fine Arts’ Medici Circle.
Cannon, a senior studying music education and voice at the School of Music, attended the Sarteano Choral Workshop in Tuscany, Italy. She participated in masterclasses, received personal instruction from vocal specialists and world-renowned conducting professors, and performed solo and with an ensemble in multiple concerts.
The workshop is directed by University of Arizona School of Music alum, Tony Thornton (DMA ’08, Choral Conducting and Historical Musicology).

“Every day, we rehearsed our repertoire with the conducting students, learned about vocal pedagogy from a vocal practitioner, and explored everything Italy had to offer,” she said. “We gave two culminating performances for the residents of Sarteano and Abbadia as well as informal concerts under the portico of the Teatro.”
An added benefit of this study abroad experience … Italian food and the beautiful locale.
“There was a sandwich shop we went to every day where they made us huge sandwiches for only 6€! They were delicious and I loved trying a different one every day. The meats, cheeses, and other addons were so fresh. And of course, we had gelato multiple times a day.”
The cohort took a hike to a waterfall and visited a local farmers market. “Both were incredible.”
“I left with so much more knowledge about my instrument, connections with other singers from around the country, and a deeper appreciation of a culture other than my own.”
