If you think of a damaged painting as a sick patient, Willem de Kooning’s Woman-Ochre was on life support. Among other things, the painting was rolled up – causing numerous fractures in the paint – after being cut from its canvas and stolen from the UAMA in 1985.

This virtual panel discussion will feature the dedicated Getty experts who not only resuscitated Woman-Ochre but remarkably improved the painting’s overall health. They’ll take a deep dive into their efforts and share the stunning results.

Panelists will include Getty paintings conservators Laura Rivers and Ulrich Birkmaier, as well as Tom Learner – Head Scientist of the Getty Conservation Institute.

All talks in the Woman-Ochre Speaker Series are generously supported by Tim Hagyard with Long Realty, specializing in historic and unusual properties.
