“Takes her signature interweaving of African diasporic dance forms to new heights.”
The New York Times

Known for blending powerful storytelling with dynamic movement, Camille A. Brown’s work taps into ancestral and contemporary stories to capture deeply personal experiences and cultural narratives of African American identity. From her award-winning trilogy on race, culture, and identity to her Broadway directorial debut, five-time Tony-nominated Camille A. Brown has earned national acclaim and recognition for her captivating work.

In 2022, she made her Broadway directorial debut for the revival of for colored girls who have considered suicide/when the rainbow is enuf, making her the first Black woman to direct and choreograph a Broadway play since Katherine Dunham in 1955. Within the same season, Camille A. Brown became the first Black artist at The Metropolitan Opera to direct a mainstage production, co-directing alongside James Robinson on Terence Blanchard’s Fire Shut Up in My Bones (2021), which she also choreographed. Her film and TV work includes Harlem (seasons 1 & 3, Amazon Prime), Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom (Netflix); Emmy award-winning Jesus Christ Superstar Live (NBC); New Year’s Eve in Rockefeller Center (NBC), and Google Arts & Culture (ink).

In her newest work, I Am, she explores Black joy and dreams up new futures, opening up creative possibilities for how we can all live and be in the world. Drawing on HBO’s Lovecraft Country and rooted in the social dances of the African Diaspora, this electrifying evening blends athletic precision with cultural storytelling. With her company of fearless dancers, Camille A. Brown creates movement that feels joyful and unstoppable. Come ready to be moved, body and soul! Presented in Centennial Hall.
