In the late 1970s, a UAMA curator raised a question after seeing a poster of Wassily Kandinsky’s painting Ruhe. The label on the poster stated the work was in a private collection, a strange detail considering the painting was owned by the University of Arizona Museum of Art … or was it?
What began as a simple observation later unfolded a bizarre tale of ill-intent, faked provenance records, a shell corporation, and – sadly – more forgeries. In this talk, Interim Director and Curator Olivia Miller will outline the circumstances of the forgeries in the UAMA collection as well as discuss the broader issues of originality, authenticity, and the gray areas in between.
