“Future Tense 2025” will celebrate the creative work of student artists, designers and makers working with — or inspired by — fiber and textile materials or techniques.

The national juried exhibition, on view Aug. 19 to Nov. 21 at the School of Art’s Joseph Gross Gallery, offers a glimpse into the future of contemporary fibers by presenting the very best work being made by students in the field today.

The show, a collaboration with the Surface Design Association, is juried by Ann Morton of The Violet Protest. A reception and talk with Morton will be held Thursday, Sept. 25, from 4 to 7 p.m.

School of Art Gallery Director + Joseph F. Gross Endowed Curator lydia see is curating collaboratively with Graduate Gallery Manager Dylan Hawkinson, who is entering his final year of MFA studies. Students enrolled in the Gallery Praxis class for fall 2025 will participate in the condition reporting and art handling process of the show, learning preparatory fundamentals and expanding their hands-on practice.

The Surface Design Association is an international membership organization providing a platform for the exchange of ideas, methods and materials. “We inspire creativity, encourage innovation, and advocate for excellence as a global leader in textile-inspired art and design,” the SDA website says. “Our community is expansive: from makers and artists to academics and enthusiasts.”
