Since 1983, La Indita has been serving much more than their original home-style cooking from family recipes. From the very beginning, La Indita’s matriarch, Maria Angelita Garcia, has ceaselessly worked towards social justice by showing equal respect to and love for all  human beings inside and outside the kitchen.

Together with her husband, Joseph Garcia – Governor of the Tohono O’Odham People of Sonora, Maria’s efforts led to the creation of a fund council designated for Sonora tribes. Her legacy precedes her.

From the first moment one steps foot in her restaurant, Maria’s legacy – that love is felt. It is simmered in every dish and emulated by her family and everyone who works to serve the most delicious Tohono-Tarascan cuisine from her kitchen. Her customers have followed La Indita to its new location, 722 N. Stone Ave, and also share their love, energy, compassion, and appetite. La Indita is honored by the dedication of the loyal customers, including so many who share Maria’s passion for social justice and find connection and community at their dining room tables.

During “In The Kitchen,” we’ll get personal with Maria, Denise, and the La Indita family as they talk about their love and care for their family and community, and the flavor of the landscape. This one goes far beyond the food, and explores the link between nourishing the body and nourishing the community. To order the very special meal featured in the video for take-out, call La Indita at 520.792.0523 by 5p on Tuesday, June 15. Pick up on Thursday, June 17, to enjoy at home while getting to know the La Indita family.
