Relative Impulse features artworks for which the making—or destroying—of family archives is material and metaphor. Funny, heart-wrenching, or bizarre, using the ephemera of memory itself or a copy of a copy, each artwork reminds us that everything’s relative.
Juried from an open call, the exhibition brings together UA students, alumni, and faculty alongside local, national and internationally-exhibiting artists to present hyper-intimate yet universal ruminations on the impact family plays on artmaking.
Featuring: Ant M Lobo, David Weed, Destini Ross, Elizabeth Burden, Epiphany Knedler, Ghazal Hesami, Jesse Hinson, Jonathan Ade, Kaitlyn Jo Smith, Karen M Zimmermann + Tomiko Jones, Katherine Wang, Kimberly Anderson, Kira Keck, Lex Turnbull, Madeleine G Welsch, Marcus Xavier Chormicle, Melissa Zexter, Molly Etchberger, Shirley A Wagner, Ulli Hain.
Joseph Gross Gallery is a fully accessible 2000 sq foot gallery situated in the School of Art, part of the dynamic Arts Oasis at University of Arizona and adjacent to the University of Arizona Museum of Art. The Galleries at the School of Art aim to educate, engender interest, and promote public discourse among University of Arizona students, faculty, and staff as well as the larger Tucson and Southern Arizona communities.
Critically engaging works by contemporary artists are regularly on view in two galleries: The Rombach is completely devoted to student exhibitions, and The Gross hosts exhibitions intended to bring the vastness of contemporary art from outside the region to our students to advance critical connections within their education; to create community with artists and thinkers in the region; and to proudly feature the work being done within our program to the outside world.
