“A visionary, a pioneer, and a symbol of a new Africa”
Vasco Zama Ndebele, Cue Magazine

Join South African saxophonist and composer Steve Dyer for a powerful new experience–Freedom Melody–celebrating the present and the future, and the unbreakable human spirit, creativity, and universal values. Co-commissioned by the Lincoln Center and inspired by the Freedom Melody Festival’s fight against apartheid, Freedom Melody promises to be an evening of cultural intersection, strength, creativity, and unity.

Joined by his dynamic quartet and Tucson’s own Desert Voices, Steve Dyer revisits defining moments from 1985 Freedom Melody Festival in Gaborone, Botswana–an event filled with hope and resilience in the face of apartheid. Freedom Melody blends vibrant jazz and stirring vocals with stories of liberation to share a musical message rooted in African heritage and reaching toward a more connected, just world.

Steve Dyer’s Freedom Melody has been moved to the Century Room at the Historic Hotel Congress.
