College of Fine Arts, School of Music

Ginger Crow participated in a teaching music project in Tanzania, Africa, thanks to support from the College of Fine Arts Medici Circle.

Crow, a second-year master’s student in music education at the School of Music, spent two weeks in Africa teaching clarinet, general music and conservation lessons to students of all ages. The Daraja Music Initiative, located near Kilimanjaro, couples music education with conservation of the African Blackwood trees.

“I wanted to pursue this opportunity because I have a huge interest in working with international music programs around the world,” Crow said. “Connecting and building community with people from across the globe is so special to me. I learned how to engage and stay actively involved with my own community.”

“One of my favorite moments was being able to play clarinet and watch the students play their instruments at one of the local coffee shops with the community on Sunday evenings.”

Crow was also able to go on a safari.

“The safari was a great opportunity to see other parts around Tanzania! The vast amount of wildlife was so surreal to see and got me really into wildlife conservation.”

The College of Fine Arts is celebrating the Medici Scholar program on Monday, Oct. 14, with a special dinner and presentations with students and their donors

“I am looking forward to the Medici Scholar celebration happening tonight to share more about this trip with my donor.”

Medici Circle Appreciation

I want to personally thank Louise Glasser through the Medici Scholars program for helping me to go on this amazing experience! It was such a life-changing trip and one I would go back on in a heartbeat!
